The Trykraty Forest

The Trykraty Forest is a planted forest outside Trykraty in Voznesensk County in Mykolayiv Oblast, where the Arbuzynka River flows into Mertvovod. It was established in the 1870s by Count Skarzhynsky.

An integral part of the Buzkiy Hard National Park, this forest is mainly a grove of ash trees with a lake and a tangle of intricately winding trails and bridges over the river and man-made channels. Because of this complicated network, it is called Labyrinth.

Based on the original design for the estate park, a system of canals, dams and artificial waterfalls were constructed in the Arbuzynka riverbed, so the park is equipped with a network of paths, bridges and arbors.

Trykraty Forest includes two special sites, the Skarzhynsky Summer Farm, which is 105.7 hectares and the Vasylievska Apiary, which is 252.0 hectares.

The greatest treasures of the Trykraty Forest are its 350 ancient oaks, ranging in age from 120 to 500 years.

Canyons

The system of canyons including Arbuzynka, Aktovo and Petropavlivsk are not far from the Trykraty Forest. The most famous is Aktovo Canyon on the Mertvovod River near the village of Aktove in Voznesensk County.

The canyon system consists of old weathered granite cut by the Mertvovod and Arbuzynka Rivers to a depth of 40-50 meters. The canyon area is over 250 hectares of unique granite cliffs, boulders, steppe and aquatic ecosystems, on one of the oldest bits of the Eurasia landmass.

Every year rock climbers, spelunkers and rafting buffs come here. Natural reserve and canyon system are part of the Buzkiy Hard National Park.
